Can I Register More Than One Business Name Using the Same ABN?
Registering for an Australian Business Number (ABN) can be frustrating. It’s both time-consuming and complex if you don’t know what you’re doing. For this reason, the prospect of applying for an ABN for each business name you want to register can be frustrating.
Luckily there are ways that you can register multiple business names under the same ABN. This blog will discuss how you can register multiple business names under the same ABN and what you can do if you can’t.
When Can I Use the Same ABN to Register More Than One Business Name?
In general, there are two ways that a business can use one ABN to register multiple business names and represent numerous businesses.
Holding Companies
So long as all businesses operate under the same business structure, you can register any number of business names and conduct any number of companies under the same ABN. If the subsequent businesses operate under a unique structure, you’ll need to apply for a new ABN to register that business name.
For multiple businesses to be considered a part of the same business structure, each organisation must be owned by the same holding company. These are also sometimes known as ümbrella” or “parent” companies.
The organisations under the holding company should report directly to be holding company as a subsidiary of their business. This holding company can fund new ventures and protect its subsidiaries’ assets.
Doing Business As (DBAs)
Alternatively, your organisation can file for a DBA or “Doing Business As” permit. When you get a DBA, the government will allow your business to use a different name while still being the same business.
Generally, this means the services offered by the second business name should still fall under the services of the original business.
